Story Book Lodge Christian Camps, Inc.
Story Book Lodge is a children and adult's camp in northeastern Minnesota. Located on Cedar Island Lake near Biwabik, Minnesota, it was founded in 1948 through the combined efforts of Elizabeth Spriestersbach and Ben and Jean Tuininga. Subsequently many others have made invaluable contributions. Miss Spriestersbach had long entertained a vision of a camp for underprivileged children. She had very recently come to know the Lord Jesus as her Savior when she shared her vision with Ben Tuininga, an itinerant Bible teacher and evangelist and early teacher at Emmaus Bible School. He shared his personal vision that a camp should charge no fees and make no financial pleas, but rather trust the Lord for every provision needed.
Beginning with 12 campers for one week in 1948, Story Book Lodge has continued that "no pleas, no fees" rule of operation and today operates for 13 weeks of summer camps with as many as 175 on the grounds, with additional retreats in the autumn, winter, and spring. And the Lord has indeed met every need. Children from all faith, church, non-church and cultural backgrounds are welcome regardless of financial situation. Ben Tuininga served as Camp Director for 43 years; William Howell followed him and serves in that position currently. Story Book Lodge operates as a 501-C3 non-profit organization with a 9-member Board of Directors responsible to a Camp Sponsors Committee.
In keeping with its name, camper cabins include such eclectic facilities as a Paul Bunyan boot, a pumpkin, and a red caboose, among others. Water sports, indoor and outdoor volleyball and basketball, soccer, softball, Frisbee golf, horseshoes, Chinese cricket, floor hockey and kickball are among the available activities. Bold text
